Ukraine’s Prime Minister Steps Down Amid Strategic Shift
Ukraine’s government is undergoing a major change. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko resigned from her position on Tuesday, effective immediately. This move is part of a larger government reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Zelensky has not yet named a successor for Svyrydenko. He stated that Kyiv needs to “change its political strategy” to meet “new challenges and new tasks.” The Ukrainian parliament officially accepted Svyrydenko’s resignation through a vote on Tuesday.
Svyrydenko was appointed to her role in July 2025. She was known for her strong ties with US officials. Notably, she helped negotiate a minerals investment deal with Washington following a meeting between President Zelensky and President Donald Trump.
This government shake-up happens at a critical point in the war with Russia, now in its fourth year. Russia has increased its deadly ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine. In response, Kyiv is making plans to produce US Patriot air defense systems within its own country.
Over the weekend, Zelensky announced the reshuffle. He explained his intention to assign different individuals to manage various aspects of foreign policy. He also mentioned offering Svyrydenko a new role to lead “relations with a key partner,” though he did not specify which partner.
The prime minister’s role in Ukraine typically does not involve military strategy or frontline operations. These decisions are made by President Zelensky and his military commanders.
Svyrydenko stated that she achieved “concrete results” during her time in office. She shared a photo of herself forming a heart shape with her hands during her address to parliament.
Ukrainian media reports suggest Sergiy Koretsky, the CEO of Ukraine’s state energy firm Naftogaz, is a strong candidate to become the next prime minister. President Zelensky met with Koretsky last weekend, after announcing Svyrydenko’s planned removal. Zelensky praised Koretsky’s “effective leadership” in a “very complex sector.”
Energy management is a top priority for Ukraine. The country’s power grid has been heavily damaged by Russian attacks, causing widespread electricity outages, especially during the winter months.
