Biman Bangladesh Airlines Set for Rapid Expansion with New Aircraft Leases
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is planning a significant fleet increase, aiming to add up to 10 leased aircraft by 2027. This move will help the national carrier expand its international flight network and fill a capacity gap. It comes before 14 newly ordered Boeing aircraft begin arriving from 2031.
The airline plans to lease three aircraft initially, according to M Rashiduzzaman Millat, the State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism. The final number could grow based on operational needs and plans for new routes. If Biman leases all 10 aircraft, its current fleet of 19 planes could increase to 29. This would be a 52.6 percent rise and one of the airline’s largest short-term expansions.
The government is prioritizing honesty in the leasing process. It has started steps to hire an international expert to oversee the entire operation. This expert will ensure complete transparency in choosing which firms will provide the aircraft.
This leasing plan is separate from Biman’s existing order for 14 new Boeing aircraft. That deal is valued at about $3.7 billion, with deliveries expected between 2031 and 2035. Since new planes from major manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus are not available for immediate delivery, Biman is looking to the international leasing market. This provides a temporary solution to meet growing passenger demand and open new destinations.
Biman has already asked for proposals to dry lease three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for six years. A dry lease means Biman will operate the aircraft using its own crew, maintenance, and insurance. The airline hopes to have these planes by early 2027. They must be no more than 15 years old by mid-2027 and have seating for over 300 passengers.
Beyond these leases and the Boeing order, the government is also considering buying Airbus aircraft. This is part of a longer-term strategy to develop a diverse fleet. Bangladesh’s aviation sector is growing quickly, with other private airlines also expanding their fleets and international routes.
This expansion is crucial for Biman. It will help the airline compete for a larger share of Bangladesh’s growing international passenger market while it waits for its new, factory-built aircraft to arrive.
