Unrest in India: Opposition Challenges PM Modi on Student Crackdown and Exam Leaks
India’s political scene intensified this week as major opposition figures directly confronted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. On Tuesday, senior leaders from the Congress party led a protest directly outside the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, demanding answers and accountability.
Rahul Gandhi, a prominent opposition voice, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi and other party members, spearheaded the demonstration. Their protest specifically highlighted what they called “brutalities” against young student protesters by police during clashes on Monday. The events have sparked widespread public concern.
The Congress party’s action followed a recent police crackdown on a rapidly growing youth movement. This movement has gained significant traction across India, fueled by widespread allegations of examination paper leaks. Millions of young people are also protesting high unemployment rates and demanding greater accountability from the government for these issues.
Rahul Gandhi stated the march aimed to compel the Prime Minister to respond to these pressing national concerns. He further urged Mr. Modi to issue a direct apology to the protesters, accusing the government of failing India’s youth and actively stifling peaceful dissent.
In a significant and rare development, Union Minister Jitendra Singh later visited the protest site. There, he held direct talks with Rahul Gandhi. This meeting marked the government’s first direct political outreach to the opposition since the recent confrontations began.
While the discussion did not lead to an immediate agreement or public announcement, it clearly signaled an attempt to de-escalate rising tensions. Pressure has been mounting on the government to effectively address the youth’s grievances and restore public trust.
Addressing the Indian Parliament, Prime Minister Modi defended his administration’s handling of the examination scandal. He confirmed that those responsible for the leaks had been arrested and promised a “foolproof” examination system to prevent future incidents.
Despite this parliamentary assurance and the ongoing dialogue with government officials, the youth movement has publicly vowed to continue its campaign. They remain committed to their demands for justice and systemic reforms, indicating further unrest may lie ahead.
