Speaker’s Early Return Fuels Presidential Resignation Rumours
Bangladesh’s political landscape is abuzz with speculation as Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is set to return home two days earlier than planned. The unexpected change in schedule has intensified rumours about the possible resignation of President Md Shahabuddin.
Sources from the Parliament Secretariat confirmed Speaker Ahmed’s return from Thailand this Friday afternoon. He was initially expected to arrive on Sunday, but his travel plans were moved forward. The Speaker had travelled to Bangkok on July 19 for medical treatment.
The sudden shift in the Speaker’s schedule is closely linked to reports that President Shahabuddin might step down from his position soon. Under the nation’s Constitution, the President submits any resignation letter directly to the Speaker.
Should the President resign, the Constitution states that the Speaker would temporarily take over the President’s duties. This interim role would continue until a new President is elected. The constitutional framework also requires a new President to be chosen within 90 days if the office becomes vacant due to resignation.
A program circulated by the opposition BNP party on Thursday evening also noted the Speaker’s revised arrival. It stated that Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is expected to land in Dhaka at 12:40 PM on Friday, arriving via a Thai Airways flight.
The Constitution further clarifies that if the President is unable to perform duties due to absence, illness, or any other reason, the Speaker will assume those functions. This arrangement holds until a new President is elected or the current President can resume their responsibilities.
Amid the mounting discussions about the President’s potential departure, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad was asked about the matter after a cabinet meeting. His response was brief but added to the intrigue: “Wait until Friday.” The nation now awaits further developments.
