Thousands Evacuate French Coast as Wildfires Ignite Across Drought-Stricken Europe
More than 10,000 people have been forced from their homes and campsites near France’s Atlantic coast. A fast-moving wildfire is spreading rapidly, fueled by extreme heat and a severe drought affecting much of Europe. Scientists warn that climate change is making the continent’s water shortages worse.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Friday that France has asked the European Union for help. The request is to deal with the major wildfire in the Gironde region. Macron posted on social media that the situation remains very difficult with fires hitting the country. He stated that France has requested the activation of the European Union’s civil protection mechanism.
Across Europe, three heatwaves this season have made the drought much worse. This has put a strain on water supplies and made plants and trees very dry. As a result, wildfires have already burned more land this year than the average for the past two decades. Europe is currently the world’s fastest-warming continent.
The intense heat has also been linked to thousands of deaths across the continent. In southwestern France, officials reported on Thursday that over 10,000 people were evacuated overnight. A quickly spreading wildfire destroyed at least 2,400 hectares of land west of the city of Bordeaux.
