Measles Crisis Deepens: Bangladesh Records Over 800 Deaths
Bangladesh is currently experiencing a significant measles outbreak. Health authorities announced today that six more individuals have died showing measles symptoms. All these recent deaths occurred in the Dhaka district. This brings the total number of deaths linked to measles to 816. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) provided these figures. They were published in the DGHS’s latest measles bulletin.
Since March 15, the country has reported 721 deaths where people showed measles symptoms. Additionally, laboratory tests have confirmed measles as the cause of death for 95 other individuals. These numbers combined highlight the severe impact of the disease across Bangladesh.
The health bulletin also revealed new daily case numbers. In the last 24 hours, 613 more people across the country developed measles symptoms. This raises the total number of people experiencing symptoms to 122,763 since March 15. Furthermore, 78 new measles cases were confirmed through lab testing yesterday. The total confirmed infections now stand at 15,272.
Hospitals nationwide are actively managing many patients. Data shows that 105,298 patients with measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals since March 15. Encouragingly, a large majority have recovered. About 101,535 of these patients have already been discharged.
Medical experts are closely observing the situation. Epidemiologists explain that measles can affect individuals of any age group. However, young children are known to be the most vulnerable to this highly contagious disease. During an outbreak like this, all deaths that involve measles symptoms are treated as measles-related. The DGHS report does not include specific age details for those who have died.
The scale of the outbreak in Bangladesh is notable on a global level. The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier reported concerning statistics. Between December of last year and May of this year, Bangladesh recorded 42,174 cases of measles or its symptoms. This figure was the highest reported by any country around the world during that six-month period. The ongoing health challenge remains a serious concern for the nation.
