Iran Accuses Ukraine After Deadly Ship Attack in Caspian Sea
An Iranian merchant ship faced a deadly attack in the Caspian Sea on Saturday. The incident killed one sailor and wounded another. Iran quickly accused Ukraine of being responsible for the strike. Tehran warned that it would not leave this attack unanswered.
Iran’s foreign ministry stated the ship exploded on Saturday morning. The official IRNA news agency reported these details. Iran firmly denied any role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It said that the Islamic republic has never intervened in that war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the strikes on social media. He said Ukraine’s armed forces achieved “very strong results” with long-range attacks. These successful attacks were carried out in the Caspian Sea. Mr. Zelensky added that they targeted vessels used for military cargo shipments involving Iran.
Ukraine’s intelligence services, the SBU, also confirmed drone attacks. They reported on Telegram that these attacks hit cargo vessels. The SBU stated these ships were under international sanctions. These vessels were specifically used to transport military cargo between Iran and Russia. This incident clearly highlights how the conflict in Ukraine is affecting other countries and regions.
Following the attack, Iran called it a “hostile and criminal act.” Tehran summoned the Ukrainian charge d’affaires, who is a senior diplomat, to protest this severe incident. This formal meeting happened in Tehran on Saturday to express Iran’s anger.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a conversation with Kaja Kallas. Ms. Kallas is the European Union’s foreign policy chief. Mr. Araghchi asked for a “firm response” to this attack from the EU. He also requested the United Nations Security Council to act against what he called an act of aggression.
