ICE Officer’s Past Raises Questions After Fatal Maine Shooting
Donald Trump’s senior advisor on border issues, Tom Homan, is reviewing an immigration officer’s background. This officer was part of a deadly shooting in Maine. The officer’s family shared details about his past. They said he had serious mental health problems and a history of violent behavior.
Mr. Homan said on Sunday that if these claims are true, the officer should not have passed his background check. “Several things are under review,” Mr. Homan told CNN. This includes the training and the background check process for the officer, David Brouillette.
Mr. Brouillette is an Army veteran. Questions have grown about the Department of Homeland Security’s fast hiring process. The department hired many new officers quickly to deport more immigrants. Two recent deadly shootings in Maine and Houston have brought these concerns into focus.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stopped vehicle checks after the Maine shooting. However, Mr. Trump quickly ordered these stops to continue. He called them a key tool to find and deport immigrants without legal status. The Department of Homeland Security did not comment on the internal review.
Mr. Homan stated that “changes have been made.” Acting ICE director David Venturella has given a new order. Officers must now use body cameras when they stop vehicles. At least one body camera will record the entire event. This must happen during all vehicle stops, Mr. Homan said.
Lawmakers from both political parties are worried. They question the training and methods of the Department of Homeland Security. This is as the department works towards Mr. Trump’s deportation goals.
Officials told lawmakers about 56 complaints of excessive force against ICE officers. Thirty-two of these complaints were found to be without fault. One complaint was sent for disciplinary action, but no punishment has been given yet. The other incidents are still being investigated.
Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine has pushed for body cameras. She also helped get money for them. She said it was “very sad” that the officer in her state’s shooting did not use a camera.
