FIFA President Gianni Infantino Cancels World Cup Investment Plan After Strong Opposition
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has decided to stop his plan to sell a part of the World Cup’s future profits. He faced strong disagreement from many football groups. This decision comes after a period of widespread anger and concern across the football world.
Mr. Infantino had proposed allowing private investors to buy a share in the money made from future World Cups and other FIFA events. This idea would have created a new company called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). It was meant to handle the profitable parts of FIFA’s work. This included running tournaments and selling broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and tickets.
The plan aimed to raise $4.2 billion from investors. They would buy about a 20 percent stake in FFE. Joshua Kushner, a businessman, led one of the main investor groups.
However, many football bodies strongly opposed the plan. European football nations, led by UEFA, threatened to boycott FIFA competitions. Some senior FIFA staff members claimed Mr. Infantino had not been truthful about the project. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Mr. Infantino, resigned, calling the deal bad.
On Friday, Mr. Infantino announced he was dropping the plan. He said the project had caused too many divisions. He explained that these divisions were not good for the original goal. Many people felt the World Cup was about glory and fans, not just about making money.
Critics also worried about the impact on club football. They feared that private investors might demand more games and bigger tournaments. This could put more strain on players and affect existing club competitions. They also said Mr. Infantino did not talk to enough people before making his plan.
The sudden backlash has put Mr. Infantino’s position in doubt. He was re-elected without opposition in 2019 and 2023. His current term is due to end in March next year. A new presidential election will take place then. The deadline for candidates to enter is November 18. This recent event might encourage others to challenge him for the top job.
