Multiple Student Clashes Injure Many Across Dhaka
Several people were injured in widespread student clashes across Dhaka on Tuesday. The incidents involved various student groups. Violence was reported at Dhaka College, near Dhaka Alia Madrasa, and at National Medical Hospital. An earlier clash also took place at Jagannath University.
Police confirmed a clash inside the Dhaka College campus. Activists from Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir fought each other. Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the incident. He said several people were hurt. Police were not present inside the campus but responded after receiving information.
Later on Tuesday, more clashes began around 5:15 pm. These happened in front of Dhaka Alia Madrasa in the Bakshibazar area. Supporters of Chhatra Dal and Shibir engaged in running battles. They threw bricks at each other. Reports indicate several people were injured during these confrontations.
Meanwhile, injured activists were attacked at National Medical Hospital in Old Dhaka. These individuals were receiving treatment for injuries from earlier clashes. They belonged to Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti. Around 4:45 pm, leaders and activists from Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal entered the hospital. They assaulted the injured both outside and inside the emergency department. One injured person was reportedly dragged from the emergency ward and beaten.
Earlier that day, a clash broke out at Jagannath University. This incident involved activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. They fought with leaders and activists of Jagannath University Central Students’ Union and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti. The dispute began over entry into a seminar. This seminar marked the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising. The clashes occurred around noon in the university auditorium. Fighting later moved to the Shaheed Minar area. Many leaders and activists from JnUCSU and Chhatra Shakti were injured. Some sought treatment at National Medical Hospital. Chhatra Dal also stated that some of its activists were hurt.
