Two Years On: Family Still Seeks Remains of Son Seen Shot in Gazipur Documentary
On August 5, 2024, Md Hridoy, a 21-year-old student, left his home in Konabari, Gazipur. He joined others celebrating news that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had left Bangladesh. This day started a two-year search for his family. A new documentary now shows the tragic final moments of Md Hridoy’s life.
The documentary was made by the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP). It used mobile phone videos and social media footage. Forensic experts helped to check the videos. It shows Md Hridoy being detained by police. Several police officers surrounded him. One officer then shot Md Hridoy with a shotgun.
The young man fell to the ground. Police officers then dragged him away. They took him towards an alley leading to Konabari Police Station. The documentary shows Md Hridoy was shot from behind. His family has not seen him since that day.
Md Hridoy was a Class XII student. He also drove an autorickshaw to support his family. He was the only son of Lal Mia and Rehena Begum. His sister is Jesmin Akter. The family lives in Tangail.
Md Hridoy’s family has been searching for him for two years. His father, Lal Mia, asked the Tangail Deputy Commissioner to help find his son’s remains. In October 2024, his sister Jesmin filed a complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Md Ibrahim, Md Hridoy’s brother-in-law, filed a case at Konabari Police Station. It said police shot Md Hridoy and hid his body.
In July this year, police arrested Constable Md Akram Hossain. He was identified as the officer who shot Md Hridoy in the video. Following his arrest, police searched the Turag River in Gazipur. They used diver teams but found nothing.
The International Crimes Tribunal is still investigating. The report on Md Hridoy’s case has not yet been submitted. Md Hridoy’s family continues to wait for answers. They want to find his remains. They hope to give him a proper burial and find peace.
