California Fights Huge Wildfires While Firefighters Face Hardship
Large wildfires are burning across California. Thousands of people have left their homes. Firefighters are working hard to control these dangerous blazes. Hot and dry weather conditions have made the fires worse.
One fire, called the Timber Fire, is burning along California’s Big Sur coast. It has burned over 4,655 acres of land. Only 12 percent of this fire is currently under control. Cal Fire is California’s state firefighting agency. It said that strong winds also make this fire difficult to fight.
Authorities have closed state parks in the area. They have also told people to leave parts of Highway 1. This famous road offers beautiful views of the California coast.
Another major fire is the Bug Fire. It is burning near Reno, close to the California and Nevada border. This fire has burned about 93,381 acres. Firefighters have stopped 58 percent of it from spreading. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said 4,000 people left their homes. This included residents from a special memory care facility.
Firefighters are facing increasing pressure in recent years. Fires have become larger and more destructive. This is partly due to climate change.
The federal firefighting workforce also faces other problems. Many firefighters earn low pay. The cost of living is also very high. The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) is a labor union. It said that past budget cuts have made things worse for them.
NFFE National President Randy Erwin stated that policies from the Trump administration cut over 6,000 US Forest Service workers. Thousands of these were trained wildland firefighters. The union said these policies also threatened to move or fire more workers. They also planned to close many important research labs. These labs are key for preparing for and responding to fires.
Firefighters continue to work in difficult and dangerous conditions. They often have to deal with low pay and poor benefits. These issues add to the stress of their life-threatening jobs.
