Multiple Candidates Create Challenge for BNP in Union Parishad Polls
Union Parishad (UP) elections are approaching in Bangladesh. The Election Commission (EC) plans to announce the schedule in September. These local elections could begin by the end of this year. However, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) already faces a big challenge. Many party leaders are preparing to run for chairman posts in these polls.
In almost every union, multiple BNP leaders want to contest. Some unions even have three or four BNP hopefuls. These leaders have started campaigning. They are doing this before getting instructions from the party’s central leadership.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has been stressing the need for one candidate. He has asked party leaders to unite. Mr. Rahman wants everyone to work together for the party-backed candidate. He recently urged lawmakers to maintain unity with grassroots leaders.
However, the central leadership has not yet given formal instructions. There are no guidelines for candidate selection. BNP Joint Secretary General Emran Saleh Prince said the BNP will support popular local candidates.
This situation creates a major problem for the BNP. The party must choose one candidate from many contenders. For example, in Motobi Union of Feni Sadar upazila, at least nine BNP leaders are interested. This intense competition shows the party’s dilemma.
District and upazila BNP leaders worry about conflicts. If multiple candidates run, it could weaken the party locally. Anyone who goes against the central party’s decision may face strict action. This could include expulsion from the party.
The Election Commission is moving quickly. It is preparing to hold UP elections by the end of 2024. The government also wants to finish all local government elections this fiscal year.
The BNP has not participated in UP elections on a party basis for a long time. This makes local leaders very eager to contest this time. The party’s biggest task now is to bring all potential candidates together. They must unite behind a single contender before the election schedule is announced.
