Major Pay Increase Confirmed for Over 600,000 MPO Teachers
More than 600,000 MPO-enlisted teachers and staff across Bangladesh will receive benefits from a new national pay scale. This good news means a significant salary increase for them. A senior government official confirmed this information on Tuesday.
The Cabinet approved the new pay scale on Monday. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani shared details of the new salaries at a press conference. However, he could not confirm if MPO teachers would be included at that time. He said a decision on this matter would come later.
This caused discussions among MPO-enlisted teachers and employees. But a high-level government source later confirmed the inclusion. The official said it is 100 percent certain that MPO teachers and employees will get the new pay structure benefits.
The government provides financial support to private educational institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system. MPO teachers and employees receive their full basic salaries. They also get other allowances, such as medical allowance. Last year, their house rent allowance increased to 15 percent of their basic salary. Before that, it was only 1000 Taka per month.
The new pay structure will greatly increase basic salaries and house rent allowances. Basic salaries will rise by 100 percent to 142 percent, depending on the grade. The system will keep the current 20 salary grades. For example, the lowest grade (20th) basic salary will go from 8,250 Taka to 20,000 Taka. The highest grade (1st) salary will increase from 78,000 Taka to 156,000 Taka.
The government will introduce the new pay structure in phases starting from July 1 this year. Allowances will begin from January 1, 2028. For employees in grades 10 to 20, the new basic salary increase will come in three steps. They will get 50 percent of the increased basic salary from July this year. Another 25 percent will be added from January 2027. The final 25 percent will come from July 2027.
Employees in grades 1 to 9 will also get their increased basic salary in three steps. They will receive 40 percent of the rise from July this year. An additional 30 percent will be given from January 2027. The remaining 30 percent will take effect from July 2027.
