Alliance Warns Government: More Protests to Come After Dhaka-Chattogram March
An 11-party opposition alliance, led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, completed its first major protest march on Saturday. Thousands of people joined the ‘long march’ from Dhaka to Chattogram. The alliance issued a strong warning to the government.
They said they will continue protesting until their six key demands are met. These include putting into practice a referendum decision. They also want a trial for the July massacre.
Other demands are solving shortages of power, fuel, gas, and fertiliser. They seek to control rising prices and improve law and order. The alliance also wants an end to unfair political practices.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman spoke at the final rally. This rally took place in Chattogram. Mr. Rahman said the march was a warning to the government. He stated that upcoming protests would be tougher.
He warned that the opposition would not remain silent. Liberal Democratic Party President Oli Ahmad said the alliance would force the government to listen. Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Mamunul Haque warned of consequences if the government ignored them.
The alliance plans more long marches across the country. These will go to Rangpur on September 19. Further marches are set for Khulna on October 31 and Sylhet on November 21. A big rally in Dhaka is also planned for November.
The protest began with a rally in Dhaka’s Motijheel area. Along the route to Chattogram, leaders held five roadside rallies. Thousands of supporters cheered them on. These gatherings caused some traffic delays on the highway. Mr. Rahman and other leaders greeted the crowds.
