Princess Diana’s Iconic ‘Revenge Dress’ Heads to New York Auction
Princess Diana’s famous “revenge dress” will be sold at auction in New York this December. This iconic black gown will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s. Experts expect the dress to sell for a large sum of money.
Diana wore the daring off-the-shoulder dress to a gala dinner in London in 1994. This was on the same day her husband, then Prince Charles, admitted he had been unfaithful. He made this public admission during a television interview. Many people saw Diana’s dress choice as a strong statement.
Morgane Halimi works for Sotheby’s. She announced the upcoming sale on Thursday. Ms. Halimi said the dress carried a very powerful message for Princess Diana. Diana wore it during a very difficult and emotional time in her life.
Ms. Halimi also said the dress showed how fashion can be more than just decoration. It can be used by anyone, especially women, to send a clear message. Fashion can act like a shield or a weapon.
Christina Stambolian designed the special dress. It is estimated to sell for between USD 150,000 and USD 300,000. Some of the money raised from the sale will go to charity.
The dress was previously sold at an auction in 1997. That sale raised money for cancer and AIDS charities. Princess Diana died in a car accident in Paris shortly after, at the age of 36.
