Mirza Fakhrul’s Brother Among Three Vying for BNP Nomination in Thakurgaon-1

Three prominent members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have taken steps to become a candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election. Mirza Faisal Amin is one of them. He is the younger brother of BNP President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The other two candidates are Obaidullah Masud and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury.

These candidates collected their nomination forms on Tuesday. They visited the BNP central office in Naya Paltan, Dhaka. They must complete and submit these forms by Wednesday, September 16.

The BNP’s National Standing Committee will meet to choose the candidate. This meeting will take place on the evening of September 18. This committee also works as the party’s Nomination Board.

The Thakurgaon-1 seat became empty recently. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir left the seat when he became the BNP President. The Election Commission has set the by-election date for October 29.

Mirza Faisal Amin leads the local party. He is currently the president of Thakurgaon district BNP. He also served as the mayor of Thakurgaon municipality earlier. He has strong roots in the area.

Obaidullah Masud and Sultanul Ferdous Chowdhury are also prominent figures. Both are vice-presidents of the Thakurgaon district BNP. They have long experience in party work.

Mr. Masud has a background in student politics. He was a leader in the Chhatra Dal. He also held roles as vice-president and general secretary for the Thakurgaon Government College students’ union.

Mr. Chowdhury has experience in local government. He was chairman of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila parishad. He also served as general secretary of the Thakurgaon district Jatiya Party at one time. This shows his varied political background.

There was much talk about who would get the seat after Mr. Alamgir became president. Some people mentioned his elder daughter, Mirza Shamaruh. However, the Mirza family did not make any public statement about her running.

Mirza Shamaruh did not collect a party nomination form. This means she will not be running in the by-election. Now, three candidates are officially seeking the BNP’s support for Thakurgaon-1.
