MP Gazi Nazrul and Wife Remanded After Second Wife’s Tragic Death
Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam is now on police remand. His first wife, Maksuda Begum, is also on remand. A court ordered this on Monday in Dhaka. They are accused of helping his second wife commit suicide. This serious accusation is currently being investigated.
Gazi Nazrul Islam will stay in police custody for four days. This is for further questioning. Maksuda Begum will be held for one day. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ehsanul Islam issued the order. This decision followed a court hearing held earlier that day.
Police had asked the court for seven days of remand for both individuals. They believe more time is needed to gather information. Sub-inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarkar is the investigation officer for this case. He filed the remand application at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka.
Police brought Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda Begum to the court premises on Monday afternoon. They arrived in a police vehicle around 2:20 PM. The accused were then presented before the magistrate. The court proceedings began shortly after their arrival.
The body of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife, Mariam Khatun, was found on Sunday evening. She was 19 years old. Her body was recovered from a flat in Dhaka. This flat is located within the National Assembly Members’ Hostel.
The flat belongs to Gazi Nazrul. He lived there with both his first wife, Maksuda Begum, and his second wife, Mariam. Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed a case late Sunday night. The case was lodged at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The complaint named Gazi Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Begum, and two other people. These included Mariam’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman. Police confirmed the arrests of Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda on Monday morning. Obaidur Rahman is currently missing, and police are searching for him.
A police official from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Tejgaon division, spoke about the ongoing investigation. He confirmed that Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda were sent to court for questioning. The process of handing over Mariam’s body to her family is now underway. This will happen after the full autopsy report.
