US and Iran: Hope for Talks Amidst Strait of Hormuz Standoff

US President Donald Trump expects new talks with Iran to begin soon. This comes even after he rejected Iran’s latest peace offer. Iranian officials proposed a seven-day truce during a UN meeting in New York. They also offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz shipping channel.

President Trump did not accept Iran’s plan. He believes Iran asked for too much. “They overplayed their hand,” Trump told the news platform Axios. However, he thinks negotiations will still restart.

Sources close to the matter told Axios that indirect talks could happen as early as Monday. But Iran still stands firm on its conditions. They want these conditions met before reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global oil supplies. It is central to the conflict between Washington and Tehran. This conflict began seven months ago with US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Iran’s plan asked for an end to all Middle East fighting, including in Lebanon. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said it also sought a return to an earlier ceasefire deal. That agreement had fallen apart during fighting over Hormuz.

The previous deal called for releasing frozen Iranian money. It also asked for an end to oil sanctions. The US naval blockade would also end. “Our conditions are clear,” Minister Araghchi stated on Sunday. “We will not back down from them.”

Washington’s ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, criticized Iran’s demands. He called them a “cynical attempt.” Mr. Waltz said Iran asked for too much. They wanted sanctions lifted and billions in assets released.

In a related event, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced a drone capture on Sunday. They said they seized an American submersible drone in the Strait of Hormuz. They claimed the underwater vehicle was spying.

The US and Iran signed an agreement in June to end the war. But it quickly failed. Iran then fired on commercial ships in Hormuz. Iran accused these ships of not following its approved route.

Iran communicated its plan to the US through Qatar. Minister Araghchi said the choice now rests with the US. A Revolutionary Guards spokesman, Hossein Mohebi, warned Iran would punish the US until its seven conditions are met. Ending fighting in Yemen is one condition.
