South Korea has formally demanded an apology from North Korea. This demand comes after several explosions in the Demilitarized Zone. Two South Korean soldiers suffered serious injuries in these blasts. Seoul’s government believes North Korea secretly planted landmines there.
The incident took place last Tuesday morning. The two soldiers were part of a routine patrol unit. They were inspecting a path inside the southern side of the DMZ. Both soldiers were hit by separate mine blasts.
One soldier lost both legs. The other soldier suffered serious leg injuries. Doctors treated them immediately. South Korea’s military strongly condemned the attack. They said it was a clear violation of the 1953 armistice agreement.
North Korea has strongly rejected these accusations. Pyongyang said it had no involvement in the explosions. It called South Korea’s claims “groundless.” North Korean state media also denied planting any mines in the border area.
The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a 250-kilometer-long strip of land. It acts as a buffer between North and South Korea. It is heavily fortified with fences, watchtowers, and millions of landmines. This zone is one of the world’s most militarized borders.
Such border incidents frequently raise tensions between the two rival nations. Relations have been particularly cold for years. This new event adds further strain to the fragile peace.
South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense described the mine planting as a serious provocation. They stated it was an “inhumane act.” The Ministry warned North Korea of severe consequences. They stressed that North Korea must take responsibility.
Officials in Seoul are awaiting a formal response. They hope for an apology from Pyongyang. Without it, they say, inter-Korean relations will worsen further. The international community is closely watching the situation unfold. They urge both sides to show restraint.
The standoff continues, keeping the border region on high alert. South Korea remains firm in its demand for an apology. North Korea insists it is innocent. This disagreement leaves little room for immediate peace.
