Light Research Wins Nobel Prize for Three Scientists

Three scientists have won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel received the award on Monday. They won for their work on “light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”

Karl Deisseroth is an American, 54 years old. Peter Hegemann is a German, 71 years old. Georg Nagel is also a German, 73 years old. These three men shared a prize of 12 million Swedish crowns, which is about 1.2 million US dollars.

The Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute chose the winners. Their discovery, called optogenetics, is very important. It allows scientists to turn nerve cells in a living brain on or off. This helps researchers understand how the brain works.

Scientists around the world now use this method. It helps them study the brain’s many secrets. This research could lead to new ways to treat brain diseases.

This prize in medicine or physiology is the first Nobel announcement each year. Other prizes will be given soon. These include awards for physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and economics.

Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel started the Nobel Prizes in 1901. He wrote about them in his will. The economics prize was added later in 1968. Sweden’s central bank created it.

The medicine prize has honored major discoveries over the years. Alexander Fleming won in 1945 for penicillin. Karl Landsteiner won in 1930 for finding human blood groups. Last year, Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi won. They showed how the immune system protects healthy cells.

Expert committees choose the Nobel winners. The award ceremonies happen in Stockholm. The Peace Prize is given out in Oslo. All winners receive their awards on December 10. This day marks Alfred Nobel’s death. Royal families attend these special events.
