Asian Cricket Powerhouses Secure Direct Entry to 2026 Games Knockout Stage
Four of Asia’s leading cricket nations will begin their quest for gold at the 2026 Asian Games with a significant advantage. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have been granted direct entry into the men’s cricket knockout stage, bypassing the initial group games. This strategic advantage was revealed in the draw announced on Thursday for the upcoming multi-sport event in Nagoya, Japan.
The men’s cricket competition, featuring ten nations, is scheduled to start on September 24. While the four seeded teams can prepare directly for the quarter-finals, six other countries will first compete in a preliminary round to earn their spots. These nations are Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, and Oman.
These six aspiring teams have been carefully divided into two groups for the early stages of the tournament. Group A includes Afghanistan, the host nation Japan, and Nepal. Meanwhile, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Oman will battle it out in Group B. The top two teams from each of these preliminary groups will successfully advance to join the four seeded cricketing powerhouses in the highly anticipated knockout stage.
The women’s cricket tournament is set to commence earlier, running from September 17 to September 22. This competition will feature eight teams and is designed to jump straight into the quarter-final stage, eliminating any preliminary matches.
Defending champions India will begin their title defense against host nation Japan in what promises to be a compelling opener. Other key quarter-final clashes include Bangladesh facing China, Sri Lanka competing against Malaysia, and Pakistan challenging Thailand. Every match across both the men’s and women’s events will be played in the dynamic Twenty20 format, known for its rapid scoring and exciting finishes.
At the last Asian Games, which took place in Hangzhou in 2023, India demonstrated exceptional dominance.
