Bangladesh Alliance Begins Historic March: Seven Demands Unveiled
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman led a large opposition alliance today. They began a long march from Dhaka towards Chattogram on Saturday morning. The 11-party alliance seeks to achieve seven key demands from the government.
The march began with a rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka. Mr. Rahman spoke at this inaugural event. He said their movement is already showing results. Reactions have started in many places, he added.
The opposition leader warned against any obstacles to their long march. He stated that they have come to the streets for the people. They will return home only after securing people’s rights, he affirmed. Mr. Rahman emphasized that this movement will continue, even in Parliament. It will go on until all rights for millions of people are established, he said. He added a strong warning. Citizens will not forgive anyone who ignores their rights, he stated clearly.
The alliance first presented six demands. These include putting into practice the decision from the public vote. They also demand trials for the July massacre. The alliance wants solutions for crises in electricity, fuel oil, gas, and fertilizer. They aim to stop price increases of essential goods. Improving the law and order situation is another key demand. Finally, they want to end politics that favors only one party.
During his speech, Mr. Rahman announced a seventh demand. He said the alliance will not tolerate extortionists and corrupt people. This new point adds to their list of concerns.
The long march will travel from Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, Dhaka. It will conclude with a final rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram. Five smaller street rallies are planned along the route.
