Bangladesh Discusses Mecca Pact, Minister Assures No Risks
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir announced on Sunday that Bangladesh is discussing the Mecca Pact. These discussions are with Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He confirmed that both nations hold a positive view on Bangladesh’s possible inclusion. The government sees no risks in joining this agreement.
Humaiun Kobir made these remarks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was answering questions from journalists. The Minister recently attended a special meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). This meeting was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
During the OIC session, Minister Kobir met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud. He also spoke with Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Musa Kulaklıkaya. They discussed Bangladesh’s potential role in the Mecca Pact. Both officials showed a favorable attitude towards Bangladesh joining.
When asked about the pact’s benefits and drawbacks, Minister Kobir spoke about Bangladesh’s strong role in United Nations peacekeeping. He noted that Bangladesh has wide experience in peacekeeping. Its global reputation in this area is well-known.
He added that Saudi Arabia is a Muslim nation and guards the Two Holy Mosques. Because of this, Bangladesh sees the Mecca Pact positively. It aims to help solve problems facing the Islamic world.
Minister Kobir said, “We will inform you when we receive a formal invitation.” He confirmed that talks are continuing. Positive discussions are taking place with all partners.
He dismissed concerns about possible security risks from the pact. Minister Kobir stated that this agreement offers new opportunities. He assured that no risks are involved for Bangladesh.
Responding to a separate question about his dual citizenship, Humaiun Kobir said simply, “I am a Bangladeshi.”
