Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Resigns, Speaker Takes Interim Role
President Mohammed Shahabuddin of Bangladesh has officially stepped down from his position, ending his term nearly two years ahead of schedule. This significant decision, accepted by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, immediately triggers a constitutional process to elect a new head of state within 90 days.
Following the acceptance of the resignation letter, Speaker Ahmad will now assume the duties of Acting President. This is in line with Bangladesh’s Constitution, which mandates the Speaker to fill the presidential void until a new leader is elected. A press conference is scheduled for 5:00 pm at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to provide further details on these developments.
Under Article 48(1) of the Constitution, members of parliament are responsible for electing the President. Given that the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) holds a significant two-thirds majority in parliament, their chosen nominee is widely expected to become the next head of state. Senior BNP leaders have already begun discussions about potential successors for President Shahabuddin.
President Shahabuddin began his five-year term on April 24, 2023, during the tenure of the Awami League government. His term was set to conclude in April 2028. However, speculation about his departure had grown significantly in recent days within political circles. Informed sources suggested he had become mentally prepared to leave office.
The debate over his continued presidency intensified after the July 2024 mass uprising led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. This discussion became even stronger once the BNP returned to power following the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad had just returned to Dhaka from Bangkok, where he was receiving medical treatment. He cut short his trip, arriving two days earlier than planned. Upon his arrival at the airport, before the official announcement, the Speaker stated he had no prior knowledge of any plan by the President to resign. He confirmed that if a resignation occurred, he would constitutionally assume the role of Acting President.
This unexpected change marks a new chapter for Bangladesh’s top constitutional leadership, setting the stage for a swift election process.
