Bangladesh Reports Record Dengue Spike: Over 1,700 Hospitalized in One Day

Bangladesh has recorded its highest number of dengue patients in a single day this year. Hospitals across the country admitted 1,733 new patients in 24 hours. Eight people also died from dengue during this period. This brings the total death toll this year to 157.

This is the first time that more than 1,700 dengue patients have been admitted in one day. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) shared these figures today, Monday. Their Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room released a detailed dengue situation report.

From January 1 until today, 53,570 dengue patients have gone to hospitals nationwide. Nearly 49,375 of these patients have recovered and left the hospitals. Currently, 4,038 dengue patients are still receiving treatment in hospitals.

Six women and two men were among the eight people who died in the past day. The victims ranged in age. Some were young children, aged 6 to 10. Others were adults, up to 65 years old.

Dhaka South City Corporation areas reported the most new patients. There were 388 admissions. Dhaka North City Corporation followed with 302 new cases. Areas of Dhaka Division outside these two cities saw 191 patients.

Across other divisions, Khulna admitted 170 patients. Rajshahi had 143 new patients. Barishal reported 191 admissions, Mymensingh 110, Chattogram 86, and Rangpur 145. Sylhet Division recorded seven new patients.

This year, Dhaka Division areas outside the main cities recorded the highest number of overall dengue cases. They had 8,729 hospital admissions. Khulna Division, a coastal area, followed closely with 8,673 patients.

Dengue cases have increased sharply in recent months. In June, 2,907 patients were hospitalized. This number jumped to 9,206 in July. August saw an even larger rise with 20,536 patients. Already this month, 17,424 patients have been admitted in just 14 days.

Health experts are urging people to take action. They advise destroying Aedes mosquito breeding sites. Regular mosquito control is also vital. Keeping homes and surrounding areas clean can help control dengue. Experts also tell people to seek medical help quickly if they have a fever. If diagnosed with dengue, follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
