Bangladesh Schools to Update Textbooks with New History, Heroes, and AI in 2027
Millions of students in Bangladesh will soon learn from updated textbooks. The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) prepares major changes. These updates for 2027 introduce important historical figures and modern topics.
The NCTB plans new content on Bangladesh’s Liberation War. It includes sectors and brigade forces. Biographies of national heroes, the Bir Sreshthos, will be added. Textbooks will cover events of 7 November 1975. Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s role in the 1990s mass uprising will be included. Former President Ziaur Rahman’s article, “Memories of the War of Independence,” appears in the Class 9-10 Bangla textbook.
New subjects will appear in other books. Secondary ICT textbooks will discuss Artificial Intelligence (AI). This helps students with rapid technological changes. The Class-VI Bangla textbook features an article called “Third Language.” It highlights the importance of learning another language.
Four new compulsory books are being introduced for Classes IV and VI. Class-VI students get “Amar Karigori Shikkha” on vocational education. They also receive “Anandamoy Shikkha,” promoting values and happy learning. For Class-IV, new books include “Bangladesher Songskriti” (national culture) and “Kheladhula” (sports).
These new books will not have annual examinations. Students will be assessed continuously. NCTB emphasizes illustrations. The four new books will have 710 pictures. Over 300 illustrations are in the “Kheladhula” book. Learning becomes easier for students.
Nearly 310 million textbooks will be printed for pre-primary to Class-IX students. This includes 15 million copies for the new books. Books for ethnic minority and visually impaired students are included. The printing cost is about Tk1,879 crore.
Main printing should finish by November 30. However, the four new books might take longer to print. Professor Mohammad Abu Naser, an NCTB Member, said printing is on schedule. He hopes all books will be distributed on time.
Current textbooks use a 2012 curriculum. The 2022 curriculum was stopped earlier. The NCTB expects a full curriculum revision in 2028. The 2027 updates will revise existing books.
