Bangladeshi Film Makes History in Venice Competition
A groundbreaking moment for Bangladeshi cinema has arrived with Rubaiyat Hossain’s film, “The Difficult Bride.” It has secured a place in the prestigious Orizzonti competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. This marks the first time a Bangladeshi film has been selected for an official competition category at the world’s oldest film festival.
The Venice International Film Festival, set to run from September 2 to 12 at the Venice Lido, is a highly respected global event. Securing a spot in its competitive sections is a significant achievement, as only a select few films are chosen from thousands of international submissions. Director Rubaiyat Hossain expressed immense joy and honor upon learning of her film’s selection.
Rubaiyat Hossain, known for her focus on women’s narratives, described the selection as a dream fulfilled. She shared her anxiety about which section her fourth feature film would land in before the Orizzonti announcement. She sees this as a proud opportunity to represent Bangladesh on an international stage and hopes it will elevate the country’s film industry further.
The Orizzonti section is critically important, showcasing emerging talent and innovative filmmaking. It highlights films with unique local stories, creative presentations, and challenging narratives that resonate globally. Past Bangladeshi films have gained international attention, such as Abdullah Mohammad Saad’s “Rehana Maryam Noor” at Cannes.
“The Difficult Bride” is a psychological horror film set in a Dhaka beauty salon. It tells a story centered around a wedding, bridal makeup, and the unsettling journey of a bride. As her wedding preparations advance, she becomes entangled in a mysterious world shaped by beauty standards, faith, memory, and fear, conveying a message of social awareness.
This film marks Rubaiyat Hossain’s first venture into the horror genre, following her acclaimed dramas like “Meherjaan” and “Made in Bangladesh.” She noted her consistent commitment to telling women’s stories, drawing inspiration from the narratives she observes around her.
Actress Zaineen Karim takes on the lead role, making her film debut at Venice. She conveyed her excitement and gratitude for this extraordinary opportunity. The talented supporting cast includes National Film Award winner Azmeri Haque Badhon, Reekita Nondine Shimu, Sunerah Binte Kamal, Shatabdi Wadud, Saberi Alam, and Mohammad Bari.
The film is an international co-production, receiving financial support from institutions in Portugal, Norway, Germany, France, and Bangladesh. Prominent firm Cinema Boutique will handle its global distribution. While “The Difficult Bride” is the first Bangladeshi feature in a Venice competition, a short film by Ishtiaque Zico was previously selected in 2010. Rubaiyat Hossain plans to present her film at various international festivals over the coming year.
