Bangladeshi-Origin Teenager Cavan Sullivan Makes US Football History
Cavan Sullivan, a young footballer with Bangladeshi roots, has set a new record in US football. He became the youngest player to score a goal for the United States men’s team. Sullivan was just 17 years and five days old when he scored.
His historic goal came in a friendly match against Mexico on Saturday night. The United States won the game by three goals to nil. Sullivan’s goal made the score 2-0 for his team.
Just days before, his teammate Mathis Albert had broken a similar record. Albert scored against Chile at 17 years and 131 days old. Sullivan has now taken that record as his own.
Sullivan scored in the 62nd minute. He seized a poor pass from Mexico’s goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. Then he expertly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper into the net. Julian Hall scored the first goal, and Malik Tillman added the third.
The US coach praised Sullivan after the match. He called Sullivan a “fighter” and “exceptional” with the ball. The coach noted Sullivan’s skill in keeping possession. He expressed hope for Sullivan’s continued improvement.
Sullivan said scoring the goal was a dream come true. He told reporters he had prepared for this moment his whole life. He also thanked his family and coaches for their trust and support.
This is not Sullivan’s first time setting records. He made his debut in Major League Soccer (MLS) at 14 years and 293 days old. This made him the youngest player ever in the league. He also holds the record for the youngest player to win the MLS Player of the Month award.
Sullivan is having a great season with Philadelphia Union. He has scored six goals and provided eight assists in his last eight MLS matches. His strong play has helped Philadelphia stay unbeaten for 12 games, a new club record.
