DHAKA — Smoking is about to get more expensive in Bangladesh. The government has proposed a price hike for all categories of cigarettes in the national budget for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year, with premium brands facing the steepest increase.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the proposal on Thursday (11 June) while presenting a Tk9.38 lakh crore national budget in parliament.
According to the minister, the revised pricing strategy aims to strike a balance between boosting state revenue and addressing pressing public health concerns.
The New Price Breakdown (Per 10-Stick Pack)
Under the new budget proposals, the minimum retail prices for a standard 10-cigarette pack will be restructured across all four market segments:
Low-Tier: Rising to Tk62 (up from Tk60)
Medium-Tier: Rising to Tk92 (up from Tk80)
High-Tier: Rising to Tk160 (up from Tk140)
Premium-Tier: Rising to Tk210 (up from Tk185)
What’s Next? If passed in parliament, the new tariff structure will go into effect from the start of the 2026-27 fiscal year (1 July). Consumers can expect immediate retail adjustments across all major cigarette brands.
