CUET Faces Shutdown as Students Demand Answers Over Vice-Chancellor’s Sudden Removal

Students and teachers at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have been protesting for three days. They are demanding the return of their Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Abu Shadat Muhammad Sayem. His sudden removal after only 56 days in the role has caused anger on campus.

Professor Sayem was appointed Vice-Chancellor on July 27. He was removed from his position on September 21. Before becoming VC, he led the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department at CUET. Professor Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology was then named the new Vice-Chancellor.

News of the change quickly spread across the campus last Tuesday. Students responded by locking the main gate in protest. They have kept the university shut down since then, stopping all classes, examinations, laboratory work, and administrative activities. The CUET Teachers Association also supports these protests.

Protesters are demanding to know the true reason for Professor Sayem’s early removal. They say the Education Ministry must act quickly to find a solution to this situation. Past delays in resolving similar university issues have often made problems worse.

Many believe that appointments of university leaders for political reasons have often drawn criticism. Such choices often ignore what is best for students and education. Experts agree that a university runs best with a strong academician in charge, not someone chosen for political ties.

The overall quality of education in Bangladesh is a growing concern. Many graduates struggle to find jobs, while companies report a lack of skilled workers. This highlights a clear need for better education and leadership. The Education Ministry should meet with CUET authorities without delay. If Professor Sayem is competent and unbiased, the government should carefully reconsider its decision. A quick decision is important to restore stability at CUET.
