Dhaka Court Rejects Plea to Charge Minister in Deepto TV Executive Murder

A Dhaka court has today rejected a petition. This petition sought to include Road Transport Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam in a murder case. Eight other people were also part of the request. The case is about the killing of Deepto TV executive Tanzil Jahan Tamim. Mr. Tamim was murdered in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area.

Dhaka’s 13th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zahidul Islam passed the order. This happened on Monday after hearing arguments. Court Bench Assistant Sohel Mia confirmed the decision. He said these nine individuals had been cleared from the case before.

The complainant then challenged their earlier discharge. The court has now rejected that challenge. Mr. Mia added that the case will continue against those already charged.

Abdul Alim is the lawyer for the complainant. He expressed disappointment with the court’s order. Mr. Alim said they are not happy with the decision. They will appeal this order to the High Court.

Mr. Tamim was attacked at his home on October 10, 2024. This was in the Mahanagar residential area of Hatirjheel. He was taken to a hospital but died there. His father, Sultan Ahmed, filed a murder case the next day with Hatirjheel police station.

The initial police case named 16 people. These included Mirza Abdul Latif, a managing director of Pleasant Properties. Sheikh Rabiul Alam, a BNP Central Executive Committee member, was also named. Mohammad Mamun, a deputy director from the Department of Narcotics Control, was also listed.

Police had previously stated that Pleasant Properties, a company owned by Minister Rabiul Alam, built a building. This building was on Mr. Tamim’s father’s land. There was a disagreement about how to share the flats. Police alleged that Mamun, a representative of the developer company, and others beat Mr. Tamim to death.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) later submitted a charge sheet. This was on December 10, 2025. The charge sheet was against 13 people. It also included a report for one juvenile. However, PBI said there was no specific evidence against nine people. These nine included Minister Rabiul Alam. PBI recommended discharging them.

Mr. Tamim’s father, Sultan Ahmed, was not satisfied with this recommendation. He filed a no-objection petition on January 8. On March 3, a Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate rejected Mr. Ahmed’s petition. The Magistrate accepted the PBI charge sheet. He also officially discharged Minister Rabiul Alam and the eight others. Mr. Ahmed then filed the revision petition that was rejected today.

The 13 people against whom the charge sheet has been accepted include Mirza Abdul Latif and Mamunur Rashid Mamun. The nine people discharged from the case include Mohammad Mamun, from the Department of Narcotics Control, and Sheikh Rabiul Alam.
