Election Rules Spark Debate: Jamaat Pushes EC on Teacher Rights, Official’s Role
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called on the Election Commission to change several important election rules. The party also demanded the removal of a recently appointed official. These requests aim to ensure fairness in upcoming local government elections.
A six-member Jamaat delegation met with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Wednesday. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar led the delegation. They submitted a letter to the Election Commission with their demands.
One key demand is to withdraw a proposed rule. This rule would stop MPO-listed teachers from running in local government elections. Jamaat said this rule would affect hundreds of thousands of teachers and employees. They believe it goes against the country’s Constitution, which ensures equal rights for all citizens.
Jamaat also demanded the quick removal of Md Shamsul Alam. He was recently appointed as an additional secretary to the Election Commission. Jamaat claimed Mr. Alam has links to a political party. They said this appointment could harm the Election Commission’s neutrality.
The Election Commission told the delegation it did not know about Mr. Alam’s political ties. The EC added that the government made the appointment. However, Jamaat said the EC should have objected to the decision.
Additionally, Jamaat asked the Election Commission to make local government administrators ineligible to contest elections. They believe these administrators are appointed for political reasons. The party also requested the EC to consider its previous ideas for the local government election code of conduct. These ideas were shared on June 30.
Mia Golam Parwar also criticized ministers for giving different statements about election timings. He questioned the EC’s quick action in declaring a BNP leader elected from Chattogram-2. This happened on the same day the Supreme Court delivered its verdict. Mr. Parwar said the EC should have waited for the signed court order.
The delegation did not discuss the parliamentary membership of Gazi Nazrul Islam. He is an expelled lawmaker from Satkhira-4. Mr. Parwar said the party had already informed the Speaker and the Election Commission about his expulsion.
