Extortion Gang Targeting Doctors Busted by Dhaka Police
Dhaka police have arrested four people. They were part of a gang that targeted specialist doctors. The gang collected personal information about these doctors. Then, they demanded large sums of money from them.
DMP Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam announced the arrests. He spoke at a press conference on Sunday. It was held at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headquarters. Mr. Islam said the Detective Branch (DB) of the DMP uncovered the criminal group.
The gang targeted at least five specialist doctors. These doctors worked in both government and private hospitals. Professor Md Asadur Rahman of Dhaka Medical College Hospital was one victim. Professor AKM Aminul Haque of Anwar Khan Modern Hospital was another.
Police said the gang used food-delivery apps to get information. They found doctors’ home and office addresses. They also learned about their children. The gang looked for doctors who seemed financially well-off. They then called these doctors and demanded extortion money in US dollars.
Professor Asadur Rahman was attacked after he refused to pay. On July 27, five men stopped Professor Aminul Haque’s car. This happened on Dhanmondi Road 4. They threatened him. Later, on August 17, Professor Asadur Rahman was attacked in Shantinagar. People saw the attack and called the police. Police arrested a man named Jibon alias Adil there. Other gang members ran away.
Professor Asadur Rahman filed a police report. He said someone called him earlier. The caller demanded $15,000 in extortion money. The DB started an investigation into the attack. Sani Saha, 38, was arrested in Shonir Akhra. Fatin Israq Labib, 20, was arrested in Khilkhet. Two other gang members, Iban and Jibon, were already in jail.
Police identified Sani Saha as a key figure in the gang. He worked in Singapore from 2022 to 2025. During this time, he lost a lot of money in hundi transactions. Police said Sani then started extorting people to get his money back. Sani met another person, Alamgir Hossain, in Singapore in 2023. Sani was tasked with finding information about wealthy people. This included their addresses, car details, jobs, and financial situations. He was also told to extort doctors Aminul Haque and Asadur Rahman.
Sani then asked Fatin to find people for the attacks. Fatin told police he recruited five men for the attack on Professor Asadur Rahman. They were Abu Bakar, Ratul, Iban, Jibon, and Sabbir. They were paid Tk 100,000 for the attack.
The DB chief also said the gang targeted senior government officials. He added that the DB is investigating another gang. This group has been sending threat emails to various embassies.
