Floodwaters Halt Train Services on Key Coastal Route

Torrential rain has submerged a vital railway line in Chattogram, bringing all train services to a complete standstill between the city and Cox’s Bazar. The disruption affects eight daily train services, including those connecting the capital, Dhaka, to the popular tourist destination.

The flooding occurred Tuesday afternoon when water rose over the tracks near Muradpur. Officials confirmed that train operations have been suspended for safety reasons until floodwaters recede.

A section of the railway between Sholashahar and Janalihat stations is currently under nearly two feet of water. The rising water levels forced the Dhaka-bound Cox’s Bazar Express to turn back to Chattogram early this morning.

The Saikat Express, scheduled to depart from Chattogram for Cox’s Bazar this morning, was cancelled. This left hundreds of passengers stranded, including a group of friends returning from a trip. Many are now forced to seek alternative bus transportation for their onward journeys.

The afternoon departure of the Probal Express is also uncertain, as its operation depends on the delayed Saikat Express returning from Cox’s Bazar. Two major intercity trains from Dhaka, the Parjotak Express and the Cox’s Bazar Express, which pass through Chattogram, have also been officially cancelled.

Commuters are advised to check for further updates on train services. The Bangladesh Railway has stated that operations will resume once the tracks are clear and safe for travel.
