From ‘Dustbin’ to Better Care: MP Vows Faridpur Hospital Makeover

Faridpur-3 (Sadar) lawmaker Chowdhury Nayab Yusuf recently expressed deep concern. She called the Faridpur General Hospital’s environment and services unacceptable. After seeing piles of waste, she said the hospital looked like “a dustbin.” Nayab Yusuf heads the hospital’s management committee. She shared her strong views after its first meeting on Thursday.

The 100-bed Faridpur General Hospital opened in 1917. It is the largest government hospital in the district. However, patients and their families have long complained about many issues. These include poor healthcare quality, uncleanliness, and lack of staff. They also report security problems.

Lawmaker Nayab Yusuf said she personally inspected the hospital’s back area. She found it filled with rubbish, like a dumping ground. She had already told the municipality and hospital about this waste problem. There are not enough doctors, nurses, and other workers in many departments. Seriously ill patients are often sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital instead. Local people also say theft incidents happen often.

Nayab Yusuf noted the hospital’s severe overcrowding. “This is a 100-bed hospital,” she said. “But I saw about 200 patients during my visit. Many were lying on the floor.” She explained that the lack of staff affects everyone, from cleaners to doctors. She believes fixing this shortage will greatly benefit Faridpur residents.

The lawmaker announced plans to upgrade the hospital to a 250-bed facility. A formal letter has been sent to the Ministry of Health for approval. This letter requests new buildings and modern medical equipment. Development work will start in stages once the budget is approved.

Nayab Yusuf spoke about a new era of accountability. She said elected officials must address public issues like poor hospitals and roads. “It is our duty,” she stated. She acknowledged that 17 years of problems cannot be fixed quickly. However, she promised positive changes for Faridpur within the next year.

The management committee meeting discussed many improvements. These include increasing bed capacity to 250. Members also talked about better healthcare, stronger emergency services, and medicine supplies. They focused on cleanliness, better buildings, and more effective work by all hospital staff.
