Government Vows Legal Action Over Harassment of Professor Muhammad Yunus in US
Bangladesh will pursue legal action after Professor Muhammad Yunus faced harassment in the United States. Zahed Ur Rahman, the prime minister’s information adviser, announced this on Tuesday. Professor Yunus served as a former chief adviser to the interim government.
Mr. Rahman said the government would follow the same legal steps. This process was used when actress Azmeri Haque Badhon was harassed in Italy last month. He spoke at a regular press briefing about government activities.
A video from Monday circulated widely on social media. It showed Professor Yunus in a wheelchair at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport. Several people approached him. They shouted slogans and made rude comments. Protesters were heard yelling, “Why you come here?”
Expatriate supporters of the Awami League have been accused of harassing Professor Yunus. The Awami League’s activities are banned in Bangladesh. Mr. Rahman responded to questions about the incident. He said, “Of course, those committing this offence will face action.”
The information adviser warned Awami League supporters living abroad. He said they would not go unchallenged if they tried such acts. He also said the government would investigate the incident. They will check if Professor Yunus received the proper respect and treatment he deserved as a former chief adviser.
When asked about political reconciliation, Mr. Rahman spoke about the Awami League leaders. He noted their lack of regret and past threats. Given this situation, Mr. Rahman said he personally saw almost no chance of reconciliation with the party.
