Habiganj Bans Public Gatherings as Political Tensions Rise
The Habiganj district administration has imposed strict public order rules today. This action came after fears of severe clashes between two major political parties. The National Citizen Party (NCP) and the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) both planned programmes. These events were scheduled for the same time and location in the Habiganj municipal area.
Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate GM Sharfaraz issued the order on Wednesday. It bans all gatherings of five or more people. Public meetings, processions, and chanting slogans are also forbidden. The use of loudspeakers and any activities causing excessive noise are prohibited. These measures cover the entire municipal area. The aim is to prevent any disruption of public order.
The NCP had announced a protest rally and a street meeting. At the same time and place, the Habiganj Sadar upazila BNP, Habiganj municipal BNP, and Habiganj district Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal announced counter-protest rallies. Large numbers of supporters were expected at both events. This raised serious concerns about potential violence and harm to people or property.
This decision follows recent unrest in the town. On Tuesday afternoon, an attack targeted an NCP convoy. Party activists were also assaulted after an NCP programme. The NCP blamed the ruling BNP for this incident.
Later on Tuesday evening, more clashes erupted. This happened after the NCP held a protest procession in the town. In response to these incidents, the NCP called for protest rallies across the country, including Habiganj. The Habiganj BNP and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal then announced their own counter-rallies.
Deputy Commissioner GM Sharfaraz confirmed the reason for the order. He said it was issued solely to ensure public safety. He also stated that it aims to maintain peace and public order for everyone.
