Hope Floats: Sylhet Children Navigate Inundated Lands for Education
Every year, monsoon rains engulf Bangladesh’s Sylhet region. This creates a unique challenge for thousands of young students. Roads disappear under rising waters, turning familiar paths into vast inland seas. Yet, for children in areas like Bakgul Haor and Charcharikandi within Sylhet Sadar Upazila, the pursuit of knowledge continues. They swap dusty roads for boat journeys to school.
These low-lying “haor” areas are vast wetland basins, intrinsically linked to the rhythms of the rainy season. From June to October, heavy rainfall causes rivers to swell, submerging land and isolating communities. With typical routes impassable, boats become the sole means of transport, connecting villages to schools, markets, and the wider world.
For students, the morning trip is unusual. They wake early, preparing for a long, wet journey, not just for lessons. Many gather, waiting for small wooden boats to ferry them. Parents, older siblings, or dedicated community boatmen ensure children reach classrooms safely.
The journey is often hard. Some trips last an hour or more, through calm or choppy waters. Students protect schoolbags from splashes, often arriving with damp clothes. Despite discomfort and potential dangers, their faces show quiet determination.
This daily challenge shows how much these families value education. Schooling offers a clear path out of poverty for many. It provides future opportunities beyond traditional farming or fishing. The effort and resources invested in sending children to school, even when basic infrastructure fails, highlight a deep-seated hope for a better tomorrow.
