Houthi Projectile Damages Mosque, Injures Two in Saudi Arabia
A Houthi projectile hit Saudi Arabia’s southern Jazan region on Saturday. The attack wounded two people. It also damaged a mosque and several buildings. The projectile landed in al-Tuwal governorate, part of Jazan. Several vehicles were also damaged.
Saudi Civil Defence reported the incident. Officials said that targeting civilian areas violates international law. They stated that emergency procedures were put into place.
The Yemeni Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack. They said their target was a Saudi military base. This base is in Sharurah, in the southern Najran province.
This attack follows other recent Houthi strikes. On Tuesday, Houthi forces hit civilian and economic sites. These attacks were in the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran. Those strikes injured 73 people, including women and children. Saudi Civil Defence later confirmed safety in Khamis Mushait after a warning.
The conflict in Yemen has recently grown more intense. It restarted in July. A United Nations-backed truce had brought nearly four years of peace. Now, fighting has increased again.
Houthi fighters have taken control of Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast. They seized the important port city of Mocha. At the same time, Yemeni government forces have opened new battle fronts. These are in al-Jawf, Marib, and al-Bayda.
The fighting has caused many deaths and displacements. More than 500 people have been killed. Tens of thousands have been forced to leave their homes. These numbers come from the International Organization for Migration and local officials.
The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting this month. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg spoke about the crisis. He warned that Yemen faces a new and more dangerous period of war.
