Major Food Brands Pulled From Market Due to Quality Failures
Ten popular food products have been removed from markets across Bangladesh. This happened after they failed important quality tests. The Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) ordered their withdrawal on Wednesday.
BSTI found these products did not meet national standards. They also issued notices to companies. These notices ask why their licenses should not be cancelled. BSTI has told consumers not to buy these poor-quality items.
The Institution conducts regular checks on products. They collect samples from various companies. These samples are then tested in BSTI’s modern laboratory. Some brands of ghee, butter oil, and spices failed these tests.
For example, Baghabari Premium Ghee Company’s “Baghabari” brand ghee was found to be substandard. Tests showed it did not contain ghee made from milk fat. Instead, it was made with palm olein and vanaspati.
Bombay Sweets and Co. Ltd. also produced substandard spices. Their curry powder, duck meat spice, tehari spice, kalo bhuna spice, beef spice, and fish spice failed quality checks.
Other brands of ghee and butter oil that failed include Kishoreganj Food Products’ “Arun Baghabari” ghee. Also, Mamun Food Product’s “New Radhuni” and “City” brand ghee were substandard. Elders Food Products and Packaging Industries’ “Elders” brand butter oil also failed.
Kazi Imdadul Haque is the Director General (Secretary) of BSTI. He said maintaining product quality is a company’s legal duty. BSTI will take legal action if companies do not meet this responsibility. The Institution works to stop fake and bad quality goods.
The Director General advises consumers to be careful when buying products. They should check for the BSTI mark and license number. Consumers must also look at manufacturing and expiration dates. Product ingredients and other vital information should also be checked.
