Measles Crisis: Child Death Toll Reaches 902 in Bangladesh
Nine hundred and two children have now tragically died from measles or its related symptoms across Bangladesh. This concerning total has been recorded by health officials since March 15. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) shared this latest data in its official measles report released today.
Bangladesh reported eight more child deaths from measles symptoms in the past 24 hours. These recent deaths occurred between 8 AM on Friday and 8 AM on Saturday morning. Six of these children died in the Dhaka division. The remaining two children died in the Sylhet division.
Looking at the overall figures, 99 children died after being officially diagnosed with measles. However, the majority of deaths, 803 children, were specifically caused by severe measles symptoms. This distinction highlights the broad impact of the illness.
In the most recent 24-hour period, 70 children received a formal diagnosis of measles. An additional 728 children developed various measles symptoms during the same time. This means a total of 798 children were newly affected by measles or its symptoms within a single day.
Since March 15, a significant number of children have been impacted by this disease. A total of 17,800 children have received a confirmed measles diagnosis. Furthermore, 141,776 children have shown clear measles symptoms. The combined number of affected children stands at 159,576 across Bangladesh.
Despite these ongoing challenges, many children have also made full recoveries. In total, 119,089 children have successfully recovered from measles since March 15.
Hospitals admitted 700 children for measles treatment in the last 24 hours. During this period, 549 children recovered well from their illness. They were then discharged safely from the hospitals.
