Measles Outbreak Claims Nearly 800 Young Lives in Four Months
A severe measles outbreak has tragically claimed the lives of 797 children in just over four months. The Directorate General of Health Services reported today that four more children died due to measles symptoms between Monday morning and Tuesday morning. This alarming rise continues a concerning trend across the country.
The death toll has climbed rapidly in recent weeks. On June 26, fatalities due to measles and its symptoms surpassed 700. In less than a month since that date, the number is now tragically close to 800. This indicates the outbreak’s continued intensity and the severe risk it poses to young populations.
Among the four children who died in the past 24 hours, two were from the Sylhet region, one from Rajshahi, and another from Mymensingh. These scattered locations highlight the widespread impact of the disease across different parts of the country.
Beyond the fatalities, many more children are falling ill. In the last 24 hours alone, 1,008 children showed symptoms related to measles. Out of these, 130 were officially diagnosed with measles, confirming the presence of the viral infection.
Since March 15, when the outbreak began to escalate, a staggering 134,156 children have been affected by measles symptoms. Among this large number, 14,708 children have received a confirmed diagnosis of measles. These figures underscore the vast scale of the health crisis impacting the nation’s youth.
Despite the grim statistics, there are signs of recovery for many. Health services have admitted 102,244 children to hospitals for measles symptoms since March 15. Encouragingly, 98,411 of these young patients have recovered fully and returned home, showing the effectiveness of medical care when available.
