Michigan’s Arab Voters Demand Accountability Over Palestine Policy
Arab Americans in Michigan are changing their voting habits. Their concerns about Palestine now strongly influence their political choices. This community has often voted for Democrats. However, many withheld support for Kamala Harris in 2024. They stated they would not vote for candidates who support Israel.
Samraa Luqman, a Yemeni-American activist, voted for President Donald Trump in 2024. She said Trump’s anti-immigration and pro-war policies were disappointing. But she felt it was important to hold the Democratic Party responsible. This was due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. She believed her vote would make Democrats accountable.
Many other Arab Americans shared her view. They saw supporting Kamala Harris as impossible. Hussein Dabajeh, a political strategist in Detroit, said the “lesser of two evils” argument no longer worked. Detroit has large Arab and Muslim communities.
The Democratic Party lost popularity with Arab Americans in 2024. President Joe Biden did not call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He also continued to provide military aid to Israel. Vice President Harris refused to consider stopping arms sales to Israel. These actions pushed many traditional Democratic voters away.
Donald Trump tried to win Arab American support during his 2024 campaign. He visited Dearborn, a Detroit suburb with many Arab and Muslim residents. He spoke at a rally and praised the community. Trump presented himself as a candidate for peace.
In heavily Arab areas of east Dearborn, election results showed a shift. About 45 percent of votes went to Trump. Green Party candidate Jill Stein received 29 percent. Kamala Harris received only 16 percent. Many Arab voters in Dearborn did not support Harris. Some voted for Trump, others for third parties, or skipped the election.
After the election, many Arab Americans felt let down by Trump. His presidency saw continued attacks in Gaza and Lebanon. He also started a war against Iran. This caused petrol prices to rise. Trump also increased actions against Palestinian rights advocates. He ended immigration protection for Yemeni nationals. Hussein Dabajeh said Arab Americans who voted for Trump now “hate him.”
Voting for Trump in 2024 was not about liking him. Amer Zahr, a Dearborn Board of Education trustee, said Arab Americans know Trump’s harmful policies well. He reminded people of Trump’s travel ban on Muslim-majority countries in 2017. Zahr explained that the Gaza conflict made the community realize they could say “no” to politicians.
As Michigan’s election season returns, Arab Americans are again at a crossroads. Many are supporting Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. They are also backing Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. Both candidates openly criticize Israel. Yemeni activist Samraa Luqman said supporting progressive Democrats like these helps the party regain trust.
For Arab Americans, issues in Gaza and Palestine are now a top priority. They say domestic policy is less important when family members are dying overseas. Their US tax dollars are used to provide military aid to Israel. Samraa Luqman stated that if a candidate values Palestinian rights, they will get their vote. This is true no matter their party.
Republicans also lost a chance to keep Arab American support. After the 2024 election, Trump supported Randy Fine. Fine is a politician known for anti-Muslim comments. Some Republican governors have called the Council on American-Islamic Relations a “terrorist” group. These actions showed Republicans were returning to negative views of the community.
Amer Zahr said Arab Americans are not just “single-issue voters.” But the suffering in Gaza meant they could not ignore the issue. He explained that people are now learning the truth about the conflict. This truth has made many feel angry and determined to act.
