Pakistan Declares Emergency Rule: Hundreds of Imran Khan’s Party Members Detained
Authorities in Pakistan have detained hundreds of members from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party. This happened after emergency rule was declared in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Police officials confirmed that 278 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have been arrested. These arrests began after the emergency rule started on Sunday.
The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a stronghold for Mr. Khan’s party. The emergency rule was put in place after many days of anti-government protests. These protests demanded the release of Imran Khan. There has also been a rise in militant violence in the area. This is especially true along the border with Afghanistan.
Thousands of Mr. Khan’s supporters have been marching in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They are also complaining about the difficult economic conditions in the country. The PTI party said on Sunday that the province’s chief minister, Sohail Afridi, was arrested. This occurred hours after Pakistan’s presidency announced the new constitutional measures.
An administrative official said that Mr. Afridi was first taken into “protective custody” at his home. He was later moved to a different place. The official did not say where Mr. Afridi was taken. The government stated that the PTI-led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would not be able to function. This will continue until the security situation gets better.
The federal government in Islamabad has accused the PTI administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of failing to control militants. This failure, they say, made the emergency rule necessary. The PTI party strongly opposes these constitutional measures. They call them undemocratic and a way for the federal government to gain more power.
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023. He faces many charges, including corruption and encouraging violence. These charges followed widespread riots in May of that year. Mr. Khan and his legal team deny all the allegations. They believe the charges are politically motivated.
