Powerful Earthquake Shakes Colombia, Initial Deaths Reported
A powerful earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, causing widespread damage and leaving at least 18 people dead in initial reports. The seismic event, measured at magnitude 7.4, had its center 100 kilometers deep in western Colombia. Its tremors were also felt in neighboring countries like Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela.
Emergency teams quickly began searching for survivors trapped under fallen structures. Many buildings collapsed across western Colombia. Authorities confirmed there was no risk of a tsunami following the strong quake.
The city of Pereira reported at least 18 fatalities. Mayor Mauricio Salazar described the situation in his city as critical. In Quibdo, the capital of Choco province, videos showed buildings reduced to rubble.
Choco province was very close to the earthquake’s center. The total number of deaths from this area is not yet clear. In Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, Mayor Alejandro Eder said about 20 buildings collapsed. Drones are being used to assess the full extent of the damage.
Residents described the terrifying experience. Martha Estrada, a 66-year-old from a coffee-growing region, said things fell in her house. She reported no electricity or cell phone service after the quake. Valeria Polo, a 29-year-old in Bogota, called the quake “very, very strong.”
Six small airports in western Colombia stopped their operations. In the capital city of Bogota, people ran into the streets in their pajamas. Bogota’s Mayor Carlos Galan stated that damage in the capital seemed minor, mostly cracks in building walls. President Abelardo de la Espriella announced he would travel to the affected region.
