Powerful Nor’easter Batters Northeast US, Leaving Thousands Without Power

More than 88,000 homes and businesses in the northeastern United States lost power this weekend. A powerful storm, known as a nor’easter, caused this wide disruption. It also led to much flooding across the region.

This number was even higher earlier on Saturday. Around 119,000 customers were without electricity. The storm also cancelled over 400 flights. Another 1,338 flights faced delays on Saturday.

Officials have warned people to be careful. They said that extreme weather conditions could be dangerous. Residents should stay away from areas with floods.

Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency. This happened in areas expected to be hit hardest. New York City was among these places. These declarations were made on Friday.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a strong warning. She said anyone going near the water was risking their life. Despite these warnings, some people were seen ignoring them. People kayaked down flooded streets in Long Island, New York. Others surfed large waves in Hampton, New Hampshire.

Jay Boyd, who lives in Ocean City, Maryland, saw the flooding. He told The Associated Press that water was very high. It was coming into people’s backyards.

Bob Oravec is a lead forecaster for the National Weather Service. He said nor’easters are common in autumn in New England. But this particular storm arrived earlier than usual. Mr. Oravec added that the storm will continue. It will bring strong winds, high tides, and heavy rain for several days.

The bad weather also affected many events. Concerts and sports games were cancelled. Musician Ed Sheeran had to cancel shows in Massachusetts on Friday and Saturday.
