President Lula Launches Campaign, Vows to Keep Brazil’s Resources Safe
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has officially launched his campaign for a fourth term. The 80-year-old leader announced his decision on Sunday in Sao Paulo. Workers’ Party supporters filled a convention center. They waved red flags and chanted Lula’s name. Lula first served as president from 2003 to 2010. He returned to power in 2023.
Lula told his supporters that this term would be his last if he wins the October election. His speech focused on Brazil’s place in the world. He spoke about national sovereignty. Lula promised to protect Brazil’s rare earth and critical mineral reserves. He wants to keep them free from foreign control.
“I want to be ready, so that no one invades this country,” Lula said. He warned that China, the United States, and France must respect Brazil’s independence. They cannot access Brazil’s mineral wealth without this respect. This message shows rising tensions between Brazil and the U.S.
The United States placed tariffs on Brazilian goods in July. They claimed unfair trade practices. Brazil’s government rejected this claim. Lula also highlighted Senator Flavio Bolsonaro’s close ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Flavio Bolsonaro is Lula’s main opponent.
Lula presented the election as a choice for national independence. He called Senator Bolsonaro a “traitor to the nation.” Senator Bolsonaro denied this accusation. A professor, Leonardo Paz, said the sovereignty message helps Lula. It allows him to name an outside problem.
A recent poll shows Lula ahead of Senator Bolsonaro. Lula has 48 percent support. Senator Bolsonaro has 43 percent. The country is divided between supporters of Lula and the Bolsonaro movement.
Lula’s supporters point to economic growth. They also note high employment and social programs. These programs have helped poorer Brazilians. One social worker, Cristiane Rosa Julho, said Lula’s policies helped her family own a home.
However, rising living costs are a concern. The public debt is also a weakness for the government. Crime is another major election issue. Organized criminal groups control parts of many communities.
Corruption investigations have touched both sides. Senator Bolsonaro is being investigated. He is accused of seeking money from a banker. One of Lula’s sons is also under investigation for suspected corruption.
Lula also spoke about his age. He told supporters he is “in great shape.” He said regular walking and strength training keep him fit. Experience will be a key point for Lula’s campaign. His opponents will focus on living costs, public safety, and government controversies.
