Prime Minister’s Residence Now a High-Security Zone

Dhaka, Bangladesh – The official residence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been declared a ‘Special Category’ Key Point Installation (KPI), bringing it under enhanced security measures. This designation follows a recommendation from the Key Point Installation Defence Committee (KPIDC) and requires stricter protocols around the property in Gulshan.

The decision comes as the Prime Minister’s previous official residence, Ganabhaban, has been converted into a museum following extensive vandalism after the 2024 student uprising. Ganabhaban is awaiting its inauguration as the “July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum.”

Prime Minister Rahman has been conducting official government business from his Gulshan residence since his return to Bangladesh. While the state guest house Jamuna is available, it is not his permanent residence.

Under the KPI Security Policy, a Key Point Installation is defined as a facility crucial to the state’s defense, preparedness, or economic strength. Facilities like Bangabhaban, the Parliament, airports, and power plants are designated as KPIs to protect them from sabotage and attacks.

The ‘Special Category’ designation is reserved for the highest-risk facilities. The policy mandates robust security features, including high boundary walls, controlled access, and constant monitoring. For this category, the Special Security Force (SSF) will coordinate overall security.

New security enhancements include strict height restrictions for nearby buildings and a clear zone around the perimeter. The policy also calls for an Intelligence Cell to provide crucial information to the SSF and the deployment of specialized security personnel, including armed guards in watchtowers. Visitors will undergo screening, and photography or video recording will be prohibited without authorization.
