Qatar Denies Iran’s Secret Detention Claims for Three Missing Pilots

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has strongly rejected claims from Iran. Iran said that three of its military pilots are being held secretly in Qatar. The ministry called Iran’s statements “misleading” on Saturday. This denial comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majed Al-Ansari, expressed surprise at Iran’s claims. He clearly stated that Qatari forces are not holding any surviving aircrew members. His statement followed public demands from Tehran for the release of their aviators.

General Mohammad Bagherzadeh is a leader in the Iranian armed forces. He wrote to the International Committee of the Red Cross. General Bagherzadeh claimed three pilots were captured alive in March. Their names are Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian. Their Su-24 warplanes crashed during hostilities. Iran claims these airmen have been held for six months without contact with their families or diplomats.

Qatar confirmed its air defense forces contacted the Iranian aircraft in March. This happened after the planes illegally entered Qatari airspace. Qatari forces engaged the targets when they received no response to warnings. Search teams later found the body of one pilot, Majid Kazemi. Qatar then worked with Iranian authorities to return his body.

This military action happened during an attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. This base is a large U.S. military site in the region. In early March, Qatar’s Defence Ministry reported shooting down two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers. This was the first time a Gulf country reported downing Iranian aircraft during the conflict.

The interception was part of wider strikes across the Gulf. These clashes started on February 28. A ceasefire in April, helped by Pakistan, temporarily stopped major fighting. However, peace talks failed in June. This led to more small clashes near the Strait of Hormuz. There were also new attacks on ships and infrastructure in the area.

Despite this disagreement, Qatar continues to work as a mediator. It is pushing for a peaceful agreement between Iran and the United States. Diplomatic efforts face challenges before a key deadline. A 60-day negotiation period set in June is ending soon. Few direct talks have taken place. This situation is limiting ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
